Arts & culture
The Internet has made it easy for everybody to be a producer of creative works. To collaborate and share arts and culture. Digital Pioneer Blender created an open source, cross platform suite of tools for 3D creation and produces stunning 3D movies with their worldwide community. Digital Pioneer *openmargin creates open margins in books where you can add personal notes and exchange viewpoints around the details in a text. These projects contribute to an open and free culture and stimulate innovation and openness in arts & culture as a whole. On this round table we discuss the state of open e-culture on the Internet.
Table host: Ruth Koppenol (*openmargin)

Education
As our current educational system is reinventing itself, pioneer projects experiment with the opportunities social media is offering in producing and making educational materials available and building platforms to improve transparency. For example Digital Pioneer Alane Newsreader produces learning materials for newcomers based on up to date newspaper articles. Digital Pioneer IAM Opencourseware opens up higher educational materials for students to use. And Digital Pioneer OCO Sterren crowdsources opinions of students and their parents about the quality of their schools. Bottum-up media projects can contribute to innovate the educational system. In this round table we discuss the state of social media in improving access to and transparency of education.

Freedom & privacy
Freedom and privacy on the Internet are at stake. Personal data is being collected ever more frequently and for an ever longer period. Access to websites can be blocked and it is even being proposed to cut off users from the Internet altogether. Individuals and small-scale organizations are mobilizing online from the bottom up around privacy issues. For example Digital Pioneer Great Firewall of China (click here for a backup service) provides a tool to see if a domain name is censored in China and allows you to view the domain via a Chinese proxy server. In collaboration with Bits of Freedom, the Dutch digital rights organization, focusing on privacy and communications freedom in the digital age, we discuss our current state of freedom & privacy on the Internet.

Healthcare
As our population is aging and healthcare is getting more complex and scarce, social media offers opportunities to balance our system. Learning from an open source way of working. For example Digital Pioneer AeXist Diabetes supports diabetes patients to log their history and collaborate with healthcare professionals online more efficiently and from a patient perspective. Digital Pioneer Ik herinner mij weer helps demented people activating their memory via a personal book with photos and memories from their past. In this round table we discuss the state of civil society initiatives in catalyzing innovation and open information in healthcare.

Journalism
Internet has democratized the role of the journalist in society. It offers new opportunities for finding or crowdsourcing information, analyzing and making information public in a networked way. For example Digital Pioneer Indymedia is a global participatory network of journalists that report on political and social issues. Digital Pioneer VJMovement is a global network of over 150 video journalists and editorial cartoonists, which brings stories from reporters on the ground. Bottum-up media projects can contribute to journalistic diversity and ensure that the information needs of citizens are met. In this round table we discuss the state of civil society journalism.

Migration & integration
Access to new media can be especially empowering to migrants and marginalized groups in society. Digital Pioneer Maroc.nl for example started a forum- and chat community for Moroccan youngsters. Digital Pioneer Lifeboat created a living web-documentary about people living with hiv. Social media projects provide these groups with platforms to communicate within their own groups and influence how majority populations perceive these groups. In collaboration with the European Bridge-IT network, a thematic network working on ICT for social integration and cultural diversity, we discuss the state of pioneering migration issues on the Internet.
Table host: Anaïs le Corvec (Bridge-IT network).

Open governance
Over the years the Digital Pioneers fund has supported a number of projects that aim at improving citizen’s access to information and services provided by government agencies. Digital Pioneer Open Kamer makes video recordings of the debates in the House of Commons better accessible for citizens. Digital Pioneer Verbeterdebuurt created a platform for citizens to report issues and post ideas about their neighborhood in an easy way. In collaboration with BendeBurgers, the brand new platform of citizen initiatives in the Netherlands that help to contribute to public affairs, we discuss the state of open governance.
Table host: Carl Lens (Chairman BendeBurgers, Verbeterdebuurt)

Sustainability
Social media can contribute to the creation of a sustainable environment in new and still undiscovered ways. It offers citizens a platform to share ambitions, information and organize change. For example, Digital Pioneer Kiwah created a new currency that is specially designed to stimulate communities to lower our CO2-emissions. Digital Pioneer MIMAQ measures air quality using mobile technology. It visualizes and monitors the pollution levels caused by traffic and industrial processes on an individual level. In this round table we investigate the role of civel society media in creating healthy ecosystems and environments.
