Some night…
While the Gay Parade pre-started the party last Friday night, we had a great dinner with digital pioneers, artists, researchers, activists and programmers and talked about the state of open e-culture in the Netherlands. Thank you all for your contributions! And thank you Sebastiaan for making pictures, you can see the whole set here.

One of the main topics of discussion was the question on the relationship between closed and open innovation in the production of culture. Is open better? Whereas a lot of participants in the round table thought that the role of the government should be default open, not all citizens or consumers have the need to consume or produce culture in an open source way or work with open licenses. For example, they just want to listen to a song. This might only be relevant now for a niche public, a public of (culture) makers.
But, one of the challenges still is to educate students who are going to be producers about the difference between working with for example Adobe (closed software) or open source tools available, so that they can make thought-out choices. And to confront consumers in their use of (commercial) social media platforms to make them conscious of what they are using and what information they allow the platform to be used…
The whole report will be posted on this blog soon…
